Islam holds reverts (new Muslims) in very high esteem, recognizing their decision to embrace the truth despite possible challenges, societal pressure, or lack of background. The Qur’an and Hadith speak with compassion, encouragement, and immense respect toward those who enter Islam.
Here are the key points from both Qur’an and Hadith:
1. All Past Sins Are Forgiven
Qur’an:
“Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them.”
(Surah Al-Anfal, 8:38)
Hadith:
“Do you not know that accepting Islam wipes out all the sins which were committed before it?”
(Sahih Muslim 121)
This is one of the most beautiful gifts to the one who embraces Islam: a complete spiritual reset.
2. Reverts Are Like Newborns
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explained that someone who embraces Islam is reborn spiritually, completely free of sin.
“Islam destroys that which came before it [of sins].”
(Sahih Muslim 121)
It’s a fresh start. Their past is not only erased—it can even turn into good deeds if they continue with sincere faith.
3. The Rewards Are Multiplied
Reverts often go through trials, but their sincerity and sacrifice are rewarded:
“Whoever accepts Islam sincerely, then all his previous good deeds will be recorded for him, and all his bad deeds will be erased…”
(Musnad Ahmad)
And in the Qur’an:
“Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.”
(Surah Al-Furqan, 25:70)
4. No Discrimination in Islam
Islam makes no distinction between someone born Muslim and someone who reverts. What matters is Taqwa (God-consciousness).
“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.”
(Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:13)
5. The Companions Themselves Were Reverts
Most of the Sahabah (companions) of the Prophet (peace be upon him) were reverts! People like:
- Abu Bakr
- Umar ibn al-Khattab
- Khalid ibn al-Walid
- Bilal ibn Rabah
Their status is among the highest in Islam.
6. Patience with Learning Is Encouraged
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was extremely gentle with new Muslims and taught step by step. In one case:
A man urinated in the mosque and the companions got angry, but the Prophet said: “Leave him. Pour a bucket of water over it. You were sent to make things easy, not to make things difficult.”
(Sahih Bukhari 6128)
This shows the importance of compassionate guidance for those new to the faith.
Summary
Islam teaches that reverts:
- Are completely forgiven of past sins,
- Are rewarded greatly for their faith,
- Are equal in status to born Muslims,
- Are part of a long tradition, including many of the greatest companions,
- Deserve gentle teaching and patience.
If you’re a revert or supporting someone who is—know that Allah is with you, your journey is honored, and your steps toward Him are more beloved than you can imagine.
